Best Expandable Garden Hose

If you enjoy spending time out in the garden, then you will probably have already seen the popularity that is associated with expandable garden hose boom. They are currently making a rather large leap towards replacing standard hoses because advancements in the design and manufacturing processes have left them just as sturdy as traditional hoses.

The way in which expandable hoses are designed is incredibly efficient. They become longer as soon as they are exposed to specific levels of water pressure, but they are also capable of preventing leaks like a standard hose would be. Because these hoses are expandable, they are also lightweight in nature.

Today we are going to be looking at a few different products and seeing if we can work out which of them is the best expandable garden hose. We are also going to be looking at some of the different features that these unique hoses should have.

Best Expandable Garden Hose

Choosing the Right Expandable Hose

Choosing the right expandable garden hose can be quite a difficult task. You need to make sure that you are choosing one that suits your needs as a gardener. While these hoses do lengthen as soon as they are exposed to water pressure, some of them only grow to 50 ft. in length. At the same time, some of these shorter hoses can be attached to other hoses to make them much longer.

We believe that you should pay attention to the materials that the hoses that you look at are made out of. One of the main materials that you will see will involve a latex core. This is a frequently used natural rubber that can also be found in products like gardening gloves. It is known to be stretchy and that stretchiness is what makes it ideal in expandable hoses, where they have to stretch out in length and then shrink back in again.

Some hoses have two or three different layers of latex in their interior core, protecting you from traditional problems like leaks and ensuring that your hose can expand and contract without an issue. One of the main trade-offs that you will have to accept if you choose a hose with a latex core is flexibility. Most of the time, these hoses have a heavy-duty material on the outside. This is a necessity because it protects the latex from external conditions.

Another option for an internal material would be to have a hose with a TPC core. TPC is a type of thermoplastic that is also commonly used in expandable hoses. It is quite unique because it is resistant to heat, this quality has led to it being used a lot in industrial tubing. Even as a single layer, this material is quite durable, but it is also quite expensive. This material can be used with a myriad of hose fittings, including those that are made out of aluminum, plastic and brass. Brass is one of the most common materials that you will find because it doesn’t rust with the constant flow of water.

Naturally, a plastic hose is also an option. We would advise that you stay away from plastic hoses because they are prone to breaking and they are slowly being phased out and replaced by better alternatives. Remember that you should always choose the size of your hose based on what you need as a gardener and plenty of different sizes are available.

What are the Advantages of Owning an Expandable Garden Hose?

If you are already looking for an expandable hose, then you probably already have a good idea why you are doing that. We believe that expandable hoses are a great option because standard hoses are bulky and they take up a lot of room. They are usually also made out of heavy materials that make them difficult to move around and the tubes themselves are prone to kinking because they lack some of the flexibility that can be seen in expandable models.

Expandable hoses could easily be compared to giant water balloons. The water fills the hose and the interior stretches outwards until it hits the exterior shell. The exterior shell stops the interior from growing too large in terms of diameter and this causes the hose to swell. Expandable hoses are unlikely to kink and they are known for their flexibility. They are also lightweight enough to be moved around with ease.

When not in use, your expandable hose would simply stay compact and contracted. It is worth noting that a standard hose would quickly start to lose flexibility and stretch out over time. If you were to puncture a standard hose, then it would also be hard to patch, leading to you having to replace the entire thing. Luckily, expandable hoses can be stored away in safe locations so these things are incredibly unlikely to happen.

We would always advise that you look for an expandable hose that has brass fittings (or similar). This is because brass fittings will not rust, even when they are constantly exposed to water. Brass fittings are also heat resistant.

Aesthetic Appeal

Aesthetic appeal is not as important as the functionality that a hose can offer you, but it is still worth thinking about. Expandable hoses come in an array of different sizes and colors, meaning that there are plenty of different options for you to choose from. They are also made from different materials and these materials all look different.

If you have children at home, then it is worth noting that they will probably find expandable hoses quite fun to watch. If you enjoy entertaining them, then you could think about purchasing one that has a bright and bold color.

The TheFitLife Expandable Garden Hose is a product that we believe can make gardening an absolute breeze, especially if you have flowers in your garden. Watering flowers can be quite a chore, but this expandable garden hose makes watering flowers a fast and effortless task. When not in use, this product weighs in at 1.8 lbs., meaning that you won’t even have to worry about putting it away after you have used it because it would be light enough to throw around – not that we would recommend actually throwing it.

As we have mentioned, the material inside of your expandable hose is what you need to focus on. This particular model features an internal triple latex core, meaning that it is strong enough to withstand heavy usage and so flexible that you do not have to worry about any kinks and collapses in the hose.

PROS
  • The latex inner core that this expandable hose has is perfect. It means that this hose can handle high levels of water pressure and it will not begin to degrade over time. It also means that, as a gardener, you will not have to worry about any kinks appearing in your hose. The manufacturer recommends that this hose can be used 1100-1200 times before it begins to degrade, which would make the lifespan of this hose 4x longer than that of a traditional hose.
  • This product is expandable, meaning that it is easy to store it away when not in use. We would recommend that you store it away from direct sunlight and somewhere where it will not be exposed to the elements.
CONS
  • If you have a large garden and a lot of different jobs to do, then this product might not be the best option for you. It can handle a high level of water pressure, but not a high enough level to take on tougher jobs. The spray nozzle that comes with this hose will not be up to the task either.

The GenLed Expandable Hose is another hose that includes a latex core, but this one is a dual layer natural latex core. The outer shell of this hose has been made of a tough polyester outer weave, a type of material that would be incredibly difficult to puncture.

  • This is a really good expandable hose, but we do have a small issue with the fact that it has plastic connectors. Plastic connectors are quite prone to breaking and cracking over time, especially when you compare them to brass and aluminum alternatives. If you do decide to go with this product, then you need to remember that plastic is not as durable or as resistant to leaks.
